More and more artists are inspired by 90s and the beginning of 2000s. The new Teyana Taylor’s “HYWI” video is literally stuffed with references to era when hip-hop became commercial and R’n’B and hip-hop artists went hand in hand.

While you are listening to Teyana Taylor’s “HYWI?” (which stands for “How You Want It?”), Mase “What You Want” сomes to your mind. The same Curtis Mayfield’s “Right on for the Darkness” sample was used in it. The Teyana Taylor’s “HYWI?” track features King Combs who is a son of Sean Combs (aka Diddy aka P.Diddy aka Puff Daddy). Puff Daddy’s son fits perfectly into the picture of the video and his rap reminds of Mase.

Teyana Taylor’s “HYWI?” directly reveals the topic of sex.

You’re my MVP
Tonight I plan on fucking you to sleep
To-to-to put it deep
Baby, you know I’m a different type of freak (Yeah)

At the end and at the beginning of the music video in the left bottom corner, there is a caption with the artist, track, director and record label. This is the exact universal way used for all the videos in the 90s and 2000s.

As for the references, 3 music videos can be distinguished: LL Cool J – “Doin’ It”, Toni Braxton “Just Be a Man About It” and Notorious B.I.G. “Mo Money Mo Problems”

LL Cool J “Doin’ It”

Toni Braxton “Just Be a Man About It”

Notorious B.I.G. “Mo Money Mo Problems”

In the Teyana Taylor’s “HYWI?” music video, MCM x Misa Hylton clothing is used. In one of the episodes, artists wear chromed out Karl Kani suits.

Director of the “HYWI?” video is Teyana Taylor herself under the Spike Tee pseudonym. This is another reference but now to the director Spike Lee who became cult for the Afro-American community. “HYWI?” is produced by Hitmaka.

Lately, The Game’s “West Side” music video has been released in which you can also see references to 90s. The Game pays his homage to 2pac.
